Easter Island (Polynesian: Rapa Nui; Spanish: Isla de Pascua) is an island in the South Pacific belonging to Chile. The name "Easter Island" was given by the Dutch explorer who discovered it on Easter Sunday 1722. It is quite a distance out in the Pacific Ocean. The nearest land mass is Pitcairn Island 1,240 miles away. It is 2,360 miles from the coast of South America. This is nearly equivalent to the distance between San Francisco and Waikiki. A plane travels from Santiago to the island and back 5 days a week.
